How Do I Add a Rss Feed

How do I Add RSS Feeds?

RSS is a protocol that some sites have (e.g. all sites built on WordPress), and that allows applications like SocialBee to know when you published a new post.

To import an RSS Feed, you will need to first identify the RSS Feed on the website that you would like to share content from. See how to do this here. Once you have found the link, you are ready to tap into the honey! To do so, you will need to navigate to the RSS tab, from the Content menu. Once you get there, click the "+ Add RSS" button.

Define your RSS

A window will pop up that will require you to Define your RSS. Here, you will be able to select the profiles that you want to assign it to, paste your RSS link (don't forget to click on Fetch to preview it), and select the category to which you want to add it. Once you've done all that, you can go ahead and create the RSS in SocialBee.

There are three more options that you can change in this tab: where you want your posts to be added in relation to your queue, add posts as Approved, and append text to your posts.

To select where to add posts in relation to your queue, you have 3 main options: Add posts to the category default (will be filled in automatically, according to your category settings), add them to the top, or add them to the bottom.

Add posts as Approved is as intuitive as it can get: leave it green for posts to be added as Approved, or click on it and make it red for posts to be added as Not Approved. Easy peasy, 🍋 squeezy!

Appending text to your posts means that the same text (in this case, "🐝 via SocialBee") will be added to all posts and all your profiles like a signature. Keep in mind that, because tagging accounts works differently for distinct social media networks, it might not work for all your profiles.

Advanced Settings

Next to Define RSS, there is a special tab dedicated to the advanced settings of your RSS. Some apply to all users, regardless of their platform plan, some are only available to Accelerate plans or higher.

You can choose between setting posts to expire, choosing not to shorten links, trimming your text for Twitter, and adding posts with an attached image to it. Let's go through them one by one.

Setting the post to expirecan be important if you want to make sure your content stays fresh and relevant.

You can choose to set them after a number of days, which means that posts will be archived from your category once that time passes, even if they were never shared. This is great for news sites or fast-paced industries.

Another option is choosing to archive posts after they've been published a number of times. This means that your posts will remain in the category until that limit is reached.

Don't shorten the links is pretty self-explanatory, we think. If you don't want your category's short link settings to be applied to RSS posts just tick this box and links will be added normally.

Trimming your text for Twitter is checked by default and allows us to shorten the text so it is suitable for Twitter sharing. Don't worry - we'll trim from the title of the post, so we keep the Appended Text and URL intact.

Add as image, when possible,finds the main image from the link and adds it on its own to your post, without the link preview. The main image will be the one set as an OG:Image in your HTML or the main large image we can find. Keep in mind that this feature will not work if you select any Facebook Profile. On the other hand, this is the default setting for Pinterest and Instagram posts.

Text of the post is a feature that is available to users underAccelerate or any higher plans. Here you can choose between three options:

  • RSS Post Title, which will import the title of the article as a caption;
  • RSS Post Description, which will import the description of the article as a caption;
  • No text, only Link Preview, which will only generate the link preview for the article.

Preview your posts

Once you've got all these settings down, you might want to see how these posts will be published to your social media. If you pressed Fetch in your Define RSS tab, you'll notice that a preview has already been generated for one of your profiles. To switch between them, navigate with your mouse to the top-right corner, click on the drop-down menu, and select the profile you want to preview your posts for.

The most recent 3 articles of your RSS feed will be previewed in this section.

Create and Import your posts

By default when you first add an RSS Feed, we will choose to fetch the latest 10 posts in this RSS feed. However, if you click on the drop-down arrow you will be able to see up 3 options:

  • Create and import 1 article;
  • Create and import 10 articles (selected by default);
  • Create and import # articles (up to 100, if the RSS feed has more).

Once an RSS Feed is added, we look for new posts every hour, so don't worry if new posts don't show up automatically. When it comes to importing posts from a feed, if the article doesn't have a featured image or it doesn't generate a link preview, it will be added as not approved. Otherwise, the article will be added as approved (if you have this setting checked in Define RSS).

Editing your RSS

If you want to make any changes to your RSS, just go to the main RSS menu, find the RSS you want to edit and click on Edit RSS. Here, you can make any changes you want to the feed and they will be applied to all articles going forward.

One exception is when you want to add or remove profiles. When you do this, a new checkbox will appear next to "Update". If you mark this, all the posts created by this RSS will be updated to match your current profile setup.

Deleting your RSS

To delete any of your feeds, all you have to do is find it in your list and click on the bin icon at the top-right corner.

This will generate a new pop-up to double-check if this is the feed you want to delete (better safe, than sorry!) and if you'd like to delete all posts previously created by this feed. Keep in mind that once you delete these posts, they're gone forever!
